<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">Hello Everyone,<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">This post is a little different to my others, but whilst flicking
through my diary which I wrote during my travels, I found that I had written
down the story which Delvine had told us about how to become a Shaman. It is a
story which young training Shamans are told, about what to expect in the final
stage, before they can become a real Shaman. I hope that you enjoy it!!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">When and if you pass the trials, then you must learn all about the
plants and animals of the Jungle. These are the most important things that you
will learn in your training as, they will become your tools. After this, you
must carry on to the final stage, where you will and must prove that you have
what it takes to become a Shaman. You must get lost in the Jungle.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">During this time, if you are ready and have what it takes you will
come across a waterfall where a lady will be waiting for you. At the waterfall
she will clean you and whisper words of love, and then take you through the
waterfall to her father. On meeting her father she will say 'I love this man,
and we are married' (You are married as you pass through the waterfall to meet
her father) But, the father is not sure, and replies 'You may be married but,
will you love him forever?' She will turn to you and say 'Yes'.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">After the meeting with her father, and the declaration of the
ladies love for you, you are allowed to spend two days, in this new world, that
exists behind the waterfall. Here she will teach you new things which prepares
you for life as a Shaman. But two days is a long time, and soon you become
hungry. So she prepares you a meal to quench your hunger. She kills a small
bird and adding vegetables she makes you a soup. But you must not eat the meal
she has prepared, instead both you and the lady will feed off of the steam
coming from the pot of food. When you are full and can 'eat' no more. She will
remove the bird from the pot, which she killed for the meal, and through
touching the bird, its life returns and it flies off.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 115%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">When the two days are over, the lady leaves you and returns
through the waterfall, where she discovers that your family are looking for
you, and believe you dead. On finding this out, she rushes back through to the
new world, where you sit learning all these new and wonderful things, and
announces that you must leave her and return to your world, where your family
wait. However, when you leave, she forbids you from telling anyone about her,
the waterfall or the new land. When you return, if you keep your promise of not
telling anyone, then you will retain all the knowledge gained from her/the new
world, and must start healing all of your people, because you are now a Shaman.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">On
May 28th, the morning after our introduction evening, where we met each other
and our tour leader Gabriella, we were all up early for the bus ride to Tena, a
small town just outside the Amazon Jungle, where we would meet Delvines Family
(our host family) and be on our way into the largest rain forest in the
world. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">The
drive to Tena was long, but the landscapes we passed were truly 'breath taking', the way the clouds rose over the mountains and how small the villages
looked in comparison to the hugeness of Quito - which as we left seemed never
ending. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

we arrived in Tena, we all went to a supermarket, to buy food items for the
local school, which we would also be supporting through our stay in the
Jungle. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">In
the afternoon, we went on two small hikes, with Delvine and his son. The first,
was to a view point, where after looking through the never ending canopy, you
could see the Napo river, which is one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon.
It was incredible to see it, and be in the jungle, especially after studying it
for so many years in Geography. The second hike was to a small river in the
jungle where we all got mud masks. It was so much fun, and the evening finished
perfectly, with me writing my diary by candlelight listening to the bugs
clicking and the rain falling. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">May
29th, our first full day in the Jungle: My roommates and I, decided this
morning that we would get up early and wash in the nearby river, it was really
refreshing, and gave a small break from the humidity of the Jungle. After a
lovely breakfast, we were all given a jungle headband and had a symbol painted
onto our faces. My symbol represented 'the cycle'. The idea that everything
that begins, must end, and will then be replaced/or start again. I thought that
this idea was really lovely, and I, admittedly from this point on, became fascinated
with their idea of Life, Death and a need to keep the balance. </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">

<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">After
we were all dressed ready to face the jungle, we started out for our<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>cascada (waterfall) climbing
trip. We climbed up 2 main waterfalls, both about 5 metres high. Rather than climbing up the other waterfalls, we used fallen trees which had been made into ladders,
by cutting grooves into the length of them. The first waterfall we came to, we
all climbed onto a ledge and stood beneath the water, the water was so heavy,
it was crazy. On the way down, I slipped and fell, cutting my leg and bruising
my bum, but looking back from the comfort of my new home, I realise how much
worse it could have been. But at the time, the only positive of hurting myself, was that I
got to try some jungle medicine. Using the sap of a tree, Delvine covered the
cut, the sap worked as an antiseptic, plaster and glue. It was incredible, and
by the time it washed off, the cut was healed. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">It
is incredible to think what the jungle contains. We went on a nature walk that
afternoon, and it just proved how blind I had been whilst walking around, to me
it just looked like a lot of greenery, but to Delvines Family and many many like them,
the Jungle is a hive of food, medicine and organic material. There are branches
which when broken down and plaited can be used as rope strong enough to hold
houses together, leaves that when weaved together can create watertight roofs.
Then there are Aloe Vera plants, root vegetables, cinnamon trees, Palm trees
that move, poisons which help catch fish when dropped in the water, bark from a
tree which when bitten causes numbing so is used in dental practices, and
rubber trees which weep rubber when cut. Out of all the days in the Jungle,
today was the day that really opened my eyes. It was incredible. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">May
30th: our last full day in the Amazon Jungle. Today we visited the
school, which at the beginning of our stay; we had brought all the food for.
Delvine's wife is the only teacher at the school and teaches a range of grades
and ages in one class. She has been teaching for many years and her main aim is
that all children get an education and therefore have the knowledge to expand
their horizons. Before we left, she explained how due to decreasing numbers of
children coming to the school, as people having the next generation of
children, have moved into cities rather than staying in the jungle, has led to
her numbers dropping, and if her numbers drop below 6 the school will be shut
down as the government won't keep it open and the children left will have to
travel for anything up to 3 hours to get to and from another school each day.
That is awful, and we all left with a huge amount of respect for Delvine's
wife. The afternoon we spent swimming in some natural springs before returning
to make CHOCOLATE!! It was delicious and we made it from scratch, from cooking
the beans, to pealing the shells, grinding the beans, cooking with the milk and
then serving with fresh fruit. Yum!!!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 15.0pt; line-height: 150%;">That
evening whilst we sat around eating our chocolate, Delvine taught us all about
the Jungle way of life and how you can become a Shaman. It starts off so young,
3-5 years old, where they will put you through a series of trials to see if you
are right for the training. The trials can be anything from putting chillies in
their eyes to making them drink tobacco tea through their nose. The trails
finish when they are 10 and they are ready for training, and their final task.
This is where they have to walk alone in the Jungle, until they find their path
and are told that they are ready to return and be a Shaman. It was incredible
and something that Delvines family believes in very strongly, but can see
through their own children, start to disappear, as they have more contact with
the outside world. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
I hope that you are all well, and thought, seeing as I have a free evening here in the wonderful city of Quito, that I would allow you to indulge on the start of "My Big Adventure". <br />
<br />
I have now been gone just over a week, which means that my Galapagos days are over, and that I have a day and a half until I start on my new adventure - my 35 day tour from Quito to La Paz. <br />
<br />
On May 19th, I flew from Quito airport to Guayaquil, and from there to San Cristobal.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnSuBLSGm5d90zTfJ5oHdY88KjkwTKeUyWUl46X98AbnAtqK6accNbsVciGs6rUc5CeA3nTExxJKfbBDEbvx6GmAH7bd2YbLs40w5vDR9hanYGXTZkYWgk736vr4comxq7s-wOCIwzbbw/s1600/IMG_2881.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnSuBLSGm5d90zTfJ5oHdY88KjkwTKeUyWUl46X98AbnAtqK6accNbsVciGs6rUc5CeA3nTExxJKfbBDEbvx6GmAH7bd2YbLs40w5vDR9hanYGXTZkYWgk736vr4comxq7s-wOCIwzbbw/s400/IMG_2881.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Arriving at San Cristobal Airport - I was finally there. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After arriving at the airport I was met by a lady called Lydia, who is one of the owners of the project I am working for called Jatun Sachu. The main aim of the project is to remove invasive species of plant which have been brought to the island over a period of years, the main plant type we worked on is called Maura. (It looks a bit like a raspberry bush.) The problem with maura is that it grows up and around already existing and usually endemic trees, strangling and killing them. This has therefore led to a huge decrease in San Cristobals endemic plant species on the island, which has huge effects on the Islands wildlife. Using machetes we cut down the Maura, creating space for endemic species of plants to be planted or as in the case at Galapaguera, another area of the island I work at, place to start growing coco, so that the island can start making its own chocolate. Over the course of the week, I made some amazing friends, and was really sad when I had to leave, but new adventures, now await.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Aside from the voluntary work, there was also opportunities to go out and explore/discover the famous Galapagos' coastal areas and famous array of animals. During my time on San Cristobal, I was lucky enought to see Giant Tortoises, snorkel with sea lions, swim with turtles and see hundreds of new types of birds, from small yellow finches, to huge pelicans and Frigit birds.<br />

On 23rd May, we got the opportunity to to walk to one of the coastal areas near Jatun Sacha, it was just breath taking, the sounds of the waves as it hit the black volcanic rock cliffs, was just something I never imagined I´d see outside of a David Attenborough documentary.<br />

been their several times before, the last time was for the Doctors, Dissection

body?" for more information on this subject. Since I lasted visited
the Museum, a lot of the exhibitions have changed, and the museum, after
working closely with a groups of school children, created a comparison item in
many of the display cases, for example in a case which contained Roman clips
and brooches, which would have once, held clothing together, there was also a
modern ladies dress with a 'statement zip' which holds the dress together. They
were trying to show that although times have changed, a lot of the items on
display have a close modern counterpart.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%;">Its been nearly 6 weeks since I have last been back to the
Eastbourne Ancestors Project and I've started to get withdrawal symptoms
so, to help me carry on, I decided to do some research into the Anglo
Saxon period and it all started with a BBC History Magazine and a trip to the
cinema. <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%;">The cinema??? Yes, to see The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey, it was
a brilliant film (definitely worth the numb bum I got from sitting glued to the
screen for three and a half hours) which followed Bilbo Baggins the newly titled
'Thief' going on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor,
with his company of 13 dwarves led by the prestigious warrior Thorin
Oakenshield from the fearful dragon Smaug. This may seem as though there is
little relation between a 2013 film and the lives of Anglo Saxons, but in fact,
John Ronald Reuel Tolkein, the great writer of The Hobbit was Professor of
Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at Oxford university in 1925 until his retirement in
1959 and his book The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, does in fact heavily
feature western European medieval culture. 'Tolkein's references to Anglo Saxon
culture wound folklore and fact into a plausible reality' one that now can be
used by people like myself to help try and understand the types of lives the
Anglo-Saxon's we are dealing with at the Eastbourne Ancestors may have been
like and the types of landscape and communities they may have lived
within. <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%;">For those of you readers who are more interested in the film
itself or actors involved, I was also very happy to find that Aiden Turner
(Mitchel from Being Human, was playing Kili) So please please please, if you
have the time check out the film, and definitely give the book a read as well,
and remember, you can put all these activities down to researching Anglo Saxon
England. (Perfect!!)<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>

<div style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%;">Hello Bare Bones Blog Followers, I hope everyone had a very good
New Year and have not missed me to much! This year’s resolution, I hope you’re
all glad to hear, is that I tend on being a much more consistent blogger as
over the last few months I have been a bit lax. (Sorry)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%;">My Christmas Adventure really started on the 3rd
December when Natasha Powers head Osteology and Research Co-ordinator of
the Museum of London came to the Eastbourne Ancestors project, to
look at the skeletal remains. This was exciting for everyone, as she is an
important person in her field of work. As soon as she had seen us, it was as
if, everything that I laid my hands on had something to do with Victorian
London and more importantly and excitingly for me,
the grisly tales, of the Victorian Resurrection Men.
(Examples of Resurrection Men, although not from the London area, are the
notorious Burke and Hare.) At the moment it may seem as though Natasha Powers
and Victorian Resurrection Men have nothing in common, but in fact,
as of the 19th October 2012, the Museum of London have an exhibition on called
"Doctors, Dissection and Resurrection Men". And so
my Adventure continued, because I just HAD to go. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%;">So on the 13th December, I headed off to the
Museum, where I spent hours, just engrossed, by everything around me. The
exhibition is clearly and cleverly laid out so you easily make you way through
the history and development of the medical profession. You learnt that the
medical profession once it started to become a popular career choice seriously
lacked the corpses to allow its apprentices to practice on. However where
there's a demand for a commodity there's always someone willing to meet it.
This led to a huge increase in the trade in dead bodies and 'burking'. The exhibition
tells the stories of Bishop, Williams and May, three infamous resurrection men
who were caught and tried for the murder of an Italian Boy. You are transported
through to the next room which shows you how through the use of these corpses
the medical schools were able to get a much better understanding of the human
body both inside and out, and therefore were a lot more able to treat their
live patients. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%;">All skeletal remains shown in the exhibition
where those found in 2006 when the Museum of London archaeologists
excavated a burial ground at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel the
skeletal remains found, showed clears signs of dissection such as drill holes,
distinct cut and saw lines. There were also the remains of monkeys, and dogs,
which suggest that animals were also dissected to see if there were any
similarities between both human and animal bodies. The exhibition
came to a close by showing where the medical profession is now, and how
cultural attitudes towards donating your body after death still vary. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%;">I would highly recommend anyone to go and
visit this exhibition even if it is just to get you wondering, who really
owns your body?<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Since I have been working for the
Eastbourne Ancestors Project, cleaning and preserving the Anglo-Saxon Skeletons
found at the old Eastbourne College of Further Education site, the treatment of
the remains has been the topic of more than the odd conversation, as we near
the end of the preservation of the remains and the next steps are starting to
take shape. This has led me to think a great deal about the process of
excavation of human remains and their subsequent aftercare. Here follows my views
and thoughts on the subject. I hope you find it interesting and informative.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Britsh Museum, London - A wonderful Day out. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">With a
growing interest in the fate of human remains, archaeologists can no longer
ignore the pressure to open up their practice to wider consultation and input.
I think that most Archaeologists will claims that they deeply respect any human
remains that they are excavating and treat them with great care and reverence.
However, what constitutes respect varies widely depending on religion, culture,
and professional discipline. The notion of how valuable, useful or sacred the
human remains are can differ an awful lot, when looking from a purely
scientific view to the religious.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Therefore
what happens to human remains after they have been excavated, leads to a choice
of either reburial or long-term retainment by a museum or archaeological
society. So even though there are only two choices available it doesn't make
the decision any easier. Due to the ever increasing popularity in human
remains, and the fact that, legally, there can be no ownership of the corpse
(The laws of England and Wales do not recognise the concept of property (i.e. a
right of ownership) in human bodies or tissue except where remains have been
treated or altered through the application of skill.) It has become popular
belief, that the public should have more of a say in the decision-making process,
in regards to the aftercare of human remains in Archaeology. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Human
remains must always be treated as a special category, and because of this there
must be a good reason for a museum to seek to keep the remains in stores, for
either temporary or long-term use. The usual practice is for archaeologists to
decide amongst themselves whether a certain human remains should be keep in a
collection for further/future research or whether they should be reburied.
However, again due to the ever increasing outside interest in the subject of
human remains, it has come to debate about whether these questions (should
human remains be kept or reburied, or should there even be a discussion over
this topic) should be discussed by a broader community than just archaeologists,
because they all have their own particular research interests and bias towards
the subject.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"><o:p></o:p></span><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">In regards to this subject of the
retainment of human remains, I believe that it is important that we find a
clear balance between the obvious importance of retaining information from the
human remains and the need for maintaining a high level of respect. The main
discussion and dispute that occurs over human remains is whether after being
dug up, cleaned and tested should they remain in a museum’s collection or immediately
be reburied, there are also a group of people that disapprove entirely of the
excavation of human bones. This group of people especially, raise the largest
problem for archaeologists, because generally they do not go out looking or
digging for skeletons. When skeletons are found immediate reburial is not
always an available option for example the burial site that was uncovered at
the old Eastbourne College of further education. The burial site was only discovered
by accident when developers moved in and dug up the car park. The skeletons in
this case had to be excavated and moved; otherwise they would have been
destroyed under the new foundations of the new housing estate. (This is quite
often how human remains are discovered when developers prepare to dig
foundations for buildings or roads and accidently discover these burials.) In
this cause, when looking at getting a balance between information retainment
and respect for the remains, excavation and removal was seen as the best and
perhaps only option. This is the project which is I am now working on and is
called "The Eastbourne Ancestors Project" and can be found at
Eastbourne Town hall. (Link to their Facebook page --><a href="http://www.facebook.com/EastbourneAncestors?ref=ts&fref=ts"> http://www.facebook.com/EastbourneAncestors?ref=ts&fref=ts</a>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">I
personally believe that keeping human remains, in a museum or archaeological society’s
collection is generally the most logical and economical solution, especially
with remains that are well over 1000 years old. I believe this for many
reasons, the first being, when comparing keeping a skeleton in a museum
collection to reburying it; you come across a lot less problems. The main
problem that occurs when talking about reburial, especially if a body is over
1000 years old, is that you can no longer be sure of the religious orientation
of the remains, and therefore the type of burial they would have received, you
cannot I feel allow yourself to apply modern day views or beliefs onto the
remains, as none of them may be shared with the remains, making the reburial
disrespectful and thoughtless. Another problem that you may encounter when
dealing with reburial is space, or a certain lack of it. Especially in the case
of the Anglo Saxon skeletons found at the old Eastbourne College of Further
Education, 200 skeletons are very hard to rebury, especially as the site is no
longer there (under a housing estate) this means looking for a plot of land
which is not religious (no church graveyards) and is also large enough for all
the bodies to fit in.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Then
comes the question of how are you to bury them? For you will never be able to
bury them in the exact same position that they were buried in to start with,
they can be reunited with their grave goods, but positioning, orientation etc.,
cannot be replicated, especially as over time due to, in this case, bad
conservation, the human remains are no longer in the condition that they were
when they were found. This of course could be used against, those of us who
believe that the excavation of human remains are ok, as they may say, if the
human remains cannot be kept at the same level of condition and protected, then
what is the point of digging them up in the first place. In this case, it would
be fair to say that, without the excavation and removal of the skeletons, then
they would no longer be in any condition at all, after being covered in
concrete, and metal foundations, and therefore even though the original
aftercare, was poor, the scientific information gained from them now, and the
conservation program which they are now going through made excavation the most
respectful and informative root to take. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">One of
the main arguments, that people have against the excavation of human remains is
that due to there being no living relatives around, no one can "stand up
for" the remains, and decide whether they can/should be dug up, however,
it appears to me, that although human remains are to be treated with respect no
matter what, the disrespect that people feel digging up the remains may have,
are instead emotions, solely to do with how the living feel and little to do
with the remains themselves. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">I would
like to make it clear that the above views and opinions are all based on my
feelings towards the subject and are not necessarily shared by anyone else at
the Eastbourne Ancestors Project. I have really enjoyed discussing these views
with friends and family, and would be very happy to hear the views and opinions
of all my wonderful blog followers! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

interesting, as it gave me an entirely different view on what a vampire is, it
also gave it a certain amount of reality, these ‘vampires’ really were seen as
a threat to people, they weren’t just creatures of fiction.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">Archaeologists had found two skeletons from the medieval period, which
had iron rods pierced through their chests; this was done to "supposedly
stop them from turning into vampires". The discovery of the skeletons
shows that this pagan ritual was very common, especially in small villages, and
that it was still happening at the end of the 1800’s. Bulgaria is home
to approximately 100 known 'vampire' burials. This makes
them fascinating for anyone interested in archaeology, folklore or
anthropology.</span> <br />

I've always been interested in Bones, Burials and Mummies, and since my many university visits/open days last year, where every one gave a long talk on Samian Pottery and how to identify it, I felt that maybe I had, had enough pottery for one year. But when I saw that there was a pottery workshop happening at the town hall last Wednesday, I thought why not, whats the worst that can happen.... and all I can say really, is that since the workshop, I think I might be turning into a 'pot'head!! </span></span><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The day started with Luke Barber, explaining what the sorting process of archaeological pottery finds consisted of, and what we needed to identify. We needed to try and identify the the forms of the vessels, the source of the material used to make the vessels and the date it was made or was in circulation. To do this we were given a 6 step plan: </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">STEP 1 - Sort all bags of finds into context order (this helps with spot dating)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">STEP 2 - Learn to sort the items into fabrics (here you will look at what the pottery is tempered with : - flint, sand, chalk, shell etc.)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">STEP 3 - Sort into time periods (e.g. early medieval, transitional, late medieval) </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">STEP 4 - Split into fabric sequences (relates to both step 2 and 3, there are two different types of sorters, lumpers and splitter. Lumpers group huge amounts of pottery together, where as splitters group into tiny groups depending on strict criteria, over the amount of sand, flint, shell and chalk found within the pottery. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">STEP 5 - Look for vessel forms (rims, externally sooted etc, if your pottery doesn't fall into at least one of these criteria they must be classified as unidentifiable.)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">STEP 6 - Quantify for the archive and log. (Sherd count, weight, EVE's <-- estimated number of vessels)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Although I wrote notes during the morning which will now always be available for me to refer to, only through practise of pottery sorting will I become more efficient and knowledgeable in the identification of pottery. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Early medieval Pottery I felt was one of the easiest to notice, and put into its time period (step 3), due to it being the only group of pottery which is consistently unglazed, noticeably coarse and gritty. The best way to tell if a piece of pottery is early medieval is to look at the edges of the piece, here it will be easiest to see the selection of material that was used to make the original vessel. Clippers and a hand lense are very useful in this process.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Tin Glazed Earthenware, is a great example of pottery throughout the transitional stages. It was first produced in London in the 1630's. It was recognisable for its thick glaze and yellowness of the clay used, however, as time passed and techniques improved, the glaze on the pots became thinner and they lost the yellowness of the original pieces. As the pieces became whiter, it gave potters a way of being able to copy the much loved Chinese ware. Throughout the 17th century, Tin Glazed Earthenware slowly came down the social scale until it can be seen at the beginning of the 18th century, even being used as chamberpots</span>. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> During the late/post medieval period, pottery became more industrialised, especially in places like Staffordshire and Newcastle Upon Tyne. When Pearlware comes in, it is quite like the Tin Glazed Earthenware above, as it starts out yellow with a thick glaze, but again over time the glaze gets thinner and the clay becomes whiter, but unlike the Tin Glaze, the producers start to add a cobalt to the glaze, again to try and mimick the Chinese Pottery, as well as White and Blue, the Pearlyware can also be green. </span></span></div>

Let's go live...</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">This week I have been looking for something interesting to read and after checking out this weeks top 10 best sellers and even considering the Twilight Saga, luckily I came to my senses just in time and decided that there was nothing for me in Waterstones. Just as I was about to give up all hope of finding a good read this week, I was recommended 'Human Bones in Archaeology by Ann Stirland'. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Highly Recommended Read!!</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">This paperback book although only 60 pages long, is well written and therefore easy to understand. Although it doesn't go into vast amounts of detail it covers a little bit of everything worth mentioning, if you are interested and just starting out in the study of human bones in archaeology. I was easily able to write notes on all the key areas covered and the diagrams dotted throughout the book which are clear and concise helped put things into perspective. (on the down side some of the black and white photos are not as clear as they could be). On the whole I would highly recommend this book.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Over the coming months I will be adding to my library of archaeology books (maybe even the odd Twilight saga book if things get really bad) and will list them to the side of my blog, for your consideration.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">As well as hunting for a good read, this week I have also started to research where I would like to go, over the second half of my gap year. I have a few ideas which I have listed below and I would welcome any advice or tips from anyone who has been to any of these places, or might have other suggestion of interesting historical or archaeological places worth visiting. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span>

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"> This holds the number 1 spot of places i'd like to visit, as although it is the most visited site in Peru, it still seems to hold that distant and other worldly appeal. Machu Picchu is a true symbol of the Incan Empire and was built around 1450AD. Unlike most other Incan cities, Machu Picchu, was never discovered by the Spanish conquest due to the prime location, making it almost entirely hidden from below. Due to this it is one of the most well-preserved Incan cities and an archaeological must see.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Number 2 on my list is Mexico city it is one of the worlds oldest and most populated city in the world (with 8,705,100 people). It is built on the ruins of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan and due to an underground pool where water is regularly drawn, the city is in fact sinking at a rate of 6-8 inches a year. The city is full of archaeology and I would love to be there on November 2nd for the Day of the Dead festival. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Number 3 on my list is the tomb-sanctuary built by King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene in 62 BC. It is built on the mountain top flanked by huge statues of himself, 2 lions, 2 eagles and various Greek, Armenian and Iranian gods. This often forgotten and some what remote treasure of Turkish History would be a marvellous place to visit.</span><br />

I won't be able to get to a computer on Sunday, so here's the second post on
my blog.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> (Downside, there will be a longer wait for my next one =[a
whole 9 days!!!)</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">In between working hard (yes I have a job as well), cleaning
bones for the Eastbourne Ancestors Project and running this blog, on Wednesday
I went to a presentation and workshop with CSI: Sittingbourne<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>(Conservation Science Investigation)
which was run by Dana Goodwin-Brown. </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">I really enjoyed the presentation which covered many methods of
archaeological conservation, such as the importance of looking at grave plans,
examining x-rays previous to working on any artefacts and different
methods of cleaning and preserving finds. These included scalpel cleaning
and air abrasion. The<span class="apple-converted-space"> before </span>and
aftercare of artefacts was also discussed and we learnt about block
lifting and the importance of using silica gel in the preservation of finds
that needs to be kept in a dry environment, such
as ferrous metal work and the fact that the gel needs to
be regularly replaced. </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">The CSI: Sittingbourne site and the Eastbourne Anglo-Saxon site
share a lot of similarities which enables them to work closely together in
regards to the conservation of artefacts. The Sittingbourne Site, known as
The Meads contained 229 burials and approximately 2500 finds making it a site
of high importance. Sittingbourne like the Eastbourne Ancestors project, is
community led, allowing for member of the public to get involved and help
maintain and preserve the archaeology found in their towns. </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></span></div>

the challenge of removing 20 year old blu tack from the back of antique thimbles, which had been used to attach it to a wooden board. (Oh how I HATE blu
tack now!!), this was done using a toothpick and scalpel under a microscope
(and a lot of time). After that I helped to remove sticky tape that had been
used to stick a medieval pot back together. Using a cotton bud and a solvent
solution I slowly removed all trace of the tape. (NOTE: NEVER use sticky tape
to stick archaeological finds back together) </span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></span></div>

when I was nine years old. Since then I have been a volunteer for

taken part in several digs in and around the Eastbourne area, and have even
appeared on television, in the local news!!! (It truly was 5 seconds of
fame; I might try and get a link posted on here at some point) Last year I did
